How Long Can You Stay on Your Parents Car Insurance?

March 29, 2019

Longer Than You Might Think

Effectively, you can remain on your parents car insurance as long as:

  1. You reside in the same household
  2. Your title and registration for the vehicle is in harmony with the:
  3. a. Insurance Company requirements, and
    b. State DMV - Title and Registration statutes.
Point #1 bears importance because auto insurance coverage is extended more broadly to those named as an “insured”. How long you can “stay on” your parents car insurance will be determined by company underwriting requirements. Those requirements tend to follow contractual verbiage. Point #2 is important since your state’s DMV statutes will dictate how each your vehicle's:
  • Title
  • Registration and
  • Insurance
must read in order to put the car on the road. As you reach adulthood, it is in you best interest to have a policy in your OWN name. As a named insured you are afforded much better protection for those unique circumstances such as:
  • Renting a car
  • Driving an non-owned vehicle
  • A passenger in another car
There can be advantages to being on your parents policy. However, once one moves out of the “rents” household, it is in your best interest to seek your own insurance policy. Living in New York, you might have a stack of insurance documents—auto, homeowners, health, or life insurance policies—filed away somewhere. But how long should you keep those documents, and specifically, what papers should you hold on to?

The year 1962 was marked by historic events—from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the passing of Marilyn Monroe. But while the world focused on these headlines, Lee A. Ryan was working alongside his brothers on my grandparents' farm when an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to join the insurance business. With no prior experience, no clients, and limited resources, my dad took a leap of faith and partnered with Nationwide Insurance to start an agency from scratch. Operating out of his home on Karr Valley Road in Almond, NY, he built his business one relationship at a time (some of whom are still clients!), laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.
