How Do I Tell Which Insurance Company is Right for Me?

February 7, 2020

To make a wise decision consider all the important criteria

There is no one “right” car insurance company for any customer.  The auto insurance marketplace is one of the most competitive service industries in the United States.   The right company for you would be one that meets the customer’s expectations for:
  • Price
  • Coverage and
  • Service
Price:

Pricing can be determined by shopping with multiple carriers. There are numerous ways to shop around. A call to an Independent Insurance Agent provides the most efficient way to find your best rate.

Coverage:

Auto insurance coverage is measured in two different ways
  1. Limits within coverage parts
    1. IE: Liability, Uninsured Motorist and Personal Injury limits
    2. Deductibles
  2. Coverage enhancements provided by the carrier
    1. Don’t miss this critical consideration. Despite what some companies may want you to believe, there are differences in the breadth of coverage by the base auto insurance contract - and - the enhancements the company offers. Some of those enhancements might include:
      1. Disappearing deductible
      2. New auto replacement options
      3. Other enhancement options
Service:

Today’s service options include considerations such as:
  • Do I have an agent that acts as my advocate?
  • Check the company rating on your state’s complaint rankings or JD Power rankings
  • If I call, to whom will I work with? Does my call go into a pool of under educated customer service reps? Or can I talk with someone who knows my situation and can respond appropriately to my needs?
  • Is there a full-featured online interface with the insurance company?
  • Does the company provide resources with access to service and informational needs?
Those are some of the considerations one might want to consider for the “right” auto insurance company. However, there is no one right insurance company for anybody.

Most consumers would be well served by any number of competitive car insurance companies. Focus on a carrier that provides a competitive price, coverage and service options.

Living in New York, you might have a stack of insurance documents—auto, homeowners, health, or life insurance policies—filed away somewhere. But how long should you keep those documents, and specifically, what papers should you hold on to?

The year 1962 was marked by historic events—from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the passing of Marilyn Monroe. But while the world focused on these headlines, Lee A. Ryan was working alongside his brothers on my grandparents' farm when an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to join the insurance business. With no prior experience, no clients, and limited resources, my dad took a leap of faith and partnered with Nationwide Insurance to start an agency from scratch. Operating out of his home on Karr Valley Road in Almond, NY, he built his business one relationship at a time (some of whom are still clients!), laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.

Many don’t realize that the insurance industry is one of the country's most regulated business segments, especially in New York State. The New York State Department of Financial Services (NYS DFS) wields significant control over the insurance business and has a stated goal of protecting consumers.

Most property insurance companies offer Actual Cash Value or Replacement Cost settlement options. Typically, insurance companies will require that you insure the property to the settlement value you choose. If you select Actual Cash Value, the amount you may be required to insure the property for will be less than the corresponding Replacement Value.

Today, an individual’s credit history can play a more significant role than any one of those traditional factors. Good Credit Scores lead to a Positive Insurance score. A good Insurance Score greatly influences what someone will pay to insure their vehicles.
