Is My Home’s Landscaping Covered Under My Homeowners Insurance?

January 31, 2020

Some policies cover specific "Landscaping" losses

Depending on the specific policy you have, there may be coverage for landscaping for certain types of losses.

In most homeowners policies, landscaping is typically defined as trees, shrubs, and plants.

Though limited on most homeowners forms, coverage for trees, shrubs and plants are typically included for:

Debris Removal
  • Most policies provide for the reasonable expense to remove trees that fall on the residence or other structures.
  • Some contracts may also provide coverage (subject to a maximum limit) to remove trees that do not damage or fall on the dwelling or other structures.
Coverage for the value of Trees, Shrubs, and Plants:
  • Many homeowner policy forms provide coverage for not only debris removal, but for the value of landscaping itself.
Typically policies that extend coverage for the value of trees, shrubs, or plants do so for specific types of losses (perils). Those perils may include:
  • Fire or lightning
  • Explosion
  • Riot or Civil Commotion
  • Aircraft
  • Vehicles
  • Theft
See the sample ISO Policy form below. Pay notice to what is not on the list (IE: Wind, Falling Objects and Weight of Ice or Snow)

Concerning coverage for “landscaping”, policy forms can vary widely. See your specific policy for details.

Living in New York, you might have a stack of insurance documents—auto, homeowners, health, or life insurance policies—filed away somewhere. But how long should you keep those documents, and specifically, what papers should you hold on to?

The year 1962 was marked by historic events—from the Cuban Missile Crisis to the passing of Marilyn Monroe. But while the world focused on these headlines, Lee A. Ryan was working alongside his brothers on my grandparents' farm when an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to join the insurance business. With no prior experience, no clients, and limited resources, my dad took a leap of faith and partnered with Nationwide Insurance to start an agency from scratch. Operating out of his home on Karr Valley Road in Almond, NY, he built his business one relationship at a time (some of whom are still clients!), laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.
