While the DMV is closed, How do I Register a Car without a Dealer?

The pandemic shutdown has resulted in many DMV offices being closed to walk-in traffic. When I purchase a car from a friend or private party (non-dealer transaction) how can I get the vehicle on the road?

The pandemic shutdown has resulted in many DMV offices being closed to walk-in traffic. When I purchase a car from a friend or private party (non-dealer transaction) how can I legitimately get the vehicle on the road?

What a great question!

Yes! It is still possible to:
  • Surrender Plates from a Car (take a car off the road) and receive an FS-6 from the DMV so that insurance can be removed from your insurance without consequence.
  • Get New Plates, Register, Title and Insure on an existing car that you already own or a privately purchased vehicle.
Can The Ryan Agency help me with this process? Sure thing!  For the clients of The Ryan Agencies:
  1. We are glad to help you put together the forms and information necessary to send to the DMV
  2. Mail your documents and pay for the postage necessary.
  3. Assist in selecting the right insurance coverage.
  4. Follow up to assure the change is properly completed.
Regardless if you are a client of The Ryan Agencies or not, we're happy to serve your insurance needs!

For those interested in a checklist of what should take place to complete a transaction with the NYS DMV during this strange time, click here to see our checklist for what is necessary to transfer plates or get new plates on a vehicle purchased outside the services of a dealer!

BTW… if your current insurance company isn’t as helpful (yep, I’m speaking to those with GEICO and other Direct to Consumer companies out there)… maybe it’s time to reconsider doing business with a locally invested, independent insurance agency like The Ryan Agencies? ;)
