What are the Differences Between an Insurance Agent and an Insurance Counselor

August 7, 2020

Remember, the more you know the smarter your decisions.

An insurance “agent” is one that has met the state requirements and passed a licensing exam in order to place/sell insurance in their state.

An insurance “counselor” could mean a number of things.

The National Alliance for Insurance Education and Research offers a professional destination called the Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC). This course is offered to agents and others interested in learning about the insurance business from a practical application perspective.

In a broader sense of the term, there are insurance “counselors” who may have earned other professional designations and experience within certain insurance disciplines. ๏ปฟ

Ryan was working alongside his brothers on my grandparents' farm when an unexpected opportunity arose—an invitation to join the insurance business. With no prior experience, no clients, and limited resources, my dad took a leap of faith and partnered with Nationwide Insurance to start an agency from scratch. Operating out of his home on Karr Valley Road in Almond, NY, he built his business one relationship at a time (some of whom are still clients!), laying the foundation for what would become a lasting legacy.
